They work fine at night because there is no direct lamp light. But I work 2nd shift and need to sleep in, and unfortunately the sun rises in front of my double window. So every morning when daylight streams past the sides of the shades as if they weren't even there, I lie awake regretting every penny I spent. I bought these because I didn't want to hang big drapes, but now I'll have to do just that to cover the sides. They look nice in the room, and weren't bad to install once I figured out there are two clicks on the brackets. They do ok when the sun goes to other side of house, but they're no good for direct sunlight." After they were installed they didn't hang right and the strings had to be adjusted to get them level. Overall I wasn't thrilled with the roman shades, but they look OK now that they are up." The Blinds.com people were right on the case in making sure I was finally satisfied, providing free postage to the manufacturer to restring the mechanism. Here's hoping this pricey (for us) Christmas gift is sturdy enough to last years, not days, before breaking again. Difficult to install in our window area. The blackout function is a layer of thick, heavy fabric, which may have caused the cord breakage, and detracts from the flow of the exterior fabric, but eliminates ALL the light--a plus!" We have furniture below the window so standard curtains wouldn't work. The shipping was fast, the quality was great and we were quite pleased to find a product that would cover the entire length of our window on only one rod (105 inches). The custom shades (cut to fit) came in 2 days, they fit perfectly and were very easy to install. Blinds arrived prior to estimated (backordered) arrival date. I would recommend that two people install these blinds, especially if they are lengthy such as mine at 75" W x 90" H each. Use your own screws that can handle penetrating a header. Two people are required as one needs to work the "clutch" mechanism to release the blind for proper leveling.
