So Your Blinds Are Too Long? Let’s Fix That!

First let’s get to know your blinds a bit. There are two cords you need to know about. Running through the center of each slat is a thicker cord called the lift cord. The second cord called the ladder cord, weaves around each slat and runs along the front and back of the blinds.

The last ‘slat’ of your blinds is called the bottom rail and pushed into it are two or more bottom rail plugs.

How To Shorten Blinds:

Step 1:

Pry the plugs out of the bottom rail with a flat head screwdriver. This will release the string ladders and reveal the knotted lift cord. Untie the knot. Slide off the bottom rail plugs and set aside.

step 1

Step 2:

Look at your window sill and make note of the desired new length of your blinds. Pull the lift cord out of the bottom rail and any slats that you wish to remove.

step 3

Step 3:

Remove the bottom rail and slats necessary to shorten the blind. Re-insert the bottom rail in between the ladder cords at your new desired height.

step 2

Step 4:

Insert each of the lift cords through the bottomrail hole. Slide the bottom rail plugs back on the lift cord and tie a knot. Make sure that the lift cords are even and that the bottomrail hangs straight.

step 5

Step 5:

Cut the ladder cord one or two rungs down from the bottom rail. Be sure that you have enough ladder hanging to be able to insert these strings into the plug holes in the bottom rail.

step 4

Step 6:

Adjust your blinds to the exact length you’d like by lowering or raising the knot in the lift cord. DO NOT try to adjust the length by pulling on the lift cord.

step 6

Step 7:

Insert the excess ladder cord and lift cord into the bottom rail plug holes and replace the plugs. Use a rubber mallet or hammer insert plugs securely.
