No matter what type of window treatment you choose to install over your door, you should first look to see if you have molding around the glass.
I do have window molding around my glass:
If you do have window molding, it is important to leave enough space above and below the glass to allow the blinds to operate properly. Your mounting hardware cannot install into the glass section, so you need proper clearance for the installation on top. You should also add a few inches to your height to allow the hold down brackets below the glass. (see below)
How to measure the height for Wood / Faux Wood Blinds on a door:
Top: Add 2 inches for installation brackets
Bottom: Add 1 1/2 inches for hold down brackets (optional but recommended)
How to measure the height for Honeycomb Cellular Shades on a door:
1. Standard Pull Cord:
Top: Add 1 inch for installation brackets
Bottom: Add 1 1/2 inches for hold down brackets (optional but recommended)
2. Continuous Cord Loop:
Top: Add 2 inches for installation brackets
Bottom: Add 1 1/2 inches for hold down brackets (optional but recommended)
3. Cordless:
Top: Add 2 inches for installation brackets
Bottom: Add 1 1/2 inches for hold down brackets (optional but recommended)
How to measure the width if you have window molding:
If you have nose molding (window trim that protrudes), we recommend that you measure from the outside edge to outside edge of the window trim for best results. This tip will provide the best coverage over your window glass and will keep any un-wanted light from escaping out the sides.
How to measure if you DO NOT have window molding around the door:
Width: Add approximately 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch while making sure not to interfere with the door handles or locks.
Height: Add 2 inches to the top and 1/2 inch to the bottom for both the installation hardware and the bottom hold down brackets.
What do I do if I have a door handle that partially covers the glass?
In this situation, we recommend that you choose a lower profile product that can fit behind door handles. A Cellular Shade, like our Blinds.com Premium Cellular Shades or a Roller / Solar Shade, like our Blinds.com Solar Roller Shades are both low profile products.
