The Best Way to Clean Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds come in two styles: rigid vinyl vanes, the most common, and soft fabric vanes. Use caution when handling the vertical blind vanes – the tabs at the top of each vane can break off if they are pulled too far in any direction. It may be easier to remove the vanes from clips when cleaning. To remove your vertical blind vanes, slide a credit card into the clip and gently slide the vane out.

  1. To remove dust from vinyl vanes, wipe down the slats with a microfiber cloth. For tougher grime or dirt, you can wipe the vanes with soapy water and a microfiber cloth, or allow them to soak in a tub. Abrasive cleaners may scratch the surface of your blinds, so use caution.
  2. You can clean fabric vertical blinds without removing the vanes. Lift away dust by sweeping down the fabric with the brush attachment of your vacuum while supporting the vane from behind with your hand.
  3. To remove stains, you can spot clean with a microfiber cloth and warm, soapy water. Dab the stain to remove and never scrub – this can cause pilling on the fabric.

Soaking fabric vanes can cause them to lose their shape and their dust-repellent coating. Never wash fabric vanes in the washing machine, as they can shrink or crumple out of shape.
